As difficult as it may be to distinguish between national pride and blind nationalism, Spielberg makes his film by insisting on visualizing an overwhelming sorrow at the loss of so much human life, and a similarly gratitude for the sacrifices that have been made. The flag in this certain frame represents everything worth fighting and living for, however, it doesn't tell the whole story.
