was born in or around 1817 into slavery in Maryland. He escaped in 1838. He was a great orator and writer, and he was a leading figure in the abolitionist m movement. He was the son of Harriet Bailey and an unknown white man. His mother was a slave so therefor ....

.... the age of twenty, Douglass succeeded in escaping from slavery by impersonating a sailor. After Douglass escaped, he started to show people the evils of slavery. He became an orator and a writer. Whenever he could he attended abolitionist meetings. In October, 1841, after attending an anti-slavery convention on Nantucket Island, Douglass became a lecturer for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and a colleague of William Lloyd Garrison. He published his own newspaper called The North Star. Douglass also participated in the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, in 1848, and wrote three autobiographies: An American Slave, My Bondage ....
