Banquo senses Macbeth's ill-concealed emotions, asking him, "Why do you start, and seem to fear/Things that do sound so fair?" The answer is revealed in this soliloquy when Macbeth tries to reassure himself that "this supernatural soliciting/Cannot be ill." Then he confesses that he fears that "horrid image" which "doth unfix my hair." In other words, for the first time, Macbeth sees Duncan's murder as the quickest way to reach his goal.
