.... that needed to be done. There were new prisoners coming in, and he had to make sure everything was running smoothly. Even when his co-workers told him they could handle it, he was still there. He also cared about his co-workers. He seemed to have a fairly close relationship with all of them, except Percy of course. When they were planning to take John Coffey to help the wardens wife, he cared enough about Dean and the fact he had children to let him stay back at E Block so he would hopefully not get in as much trouble if they got caught. Although it was his job to talk to the supposed convicts as they awaited their deaths, he cared when he talked ....
